The claimWhat Samuel actually said

Asked in 2014 about his noticeably slimmer frame, Jackson credited a new vegan diet and joked that he was trying to live forever and finish his multi-film Marvel contract. The line was a joke, but it carries a real and common belief: that dropping animal products extends life. Later reports said he added some animal protein back for a film role.

Why it mattersWhy this matters for longevity

Plant-based eating is one of the most widely promoted longevity habits, so the gap between heart benefits and lifespan claims is worth knowing.

People who eat vegan often differ from the general population in exercise, smoking and alcohol use, which makes cause and effect hard to pin down.

The evidenceWhat the science says

A meta-analysis of observational studies found vegetarian diets associated with a 25 percent lower risk of ischemic heart disease and an 8 percent lower cancer incidence, with vegan diets associated with a 15 percent lower cancer incidence. The Adventist Health Study 2 found vegetarians had about 12 percent lower all-cause mortality than nonvegetarians over nearly six years.

The same meta-analysis found no significant reduction in all-cause mortality, and a UK analysis of more than 60,000 people found no overall mortality difference between vegetarians and comparable nonvegetarians. All of this is observational, and no trial has tested a vegan diet against lifespan.

The practical lesson

Eating more whole plant foods is a reasonable move for heart health, but nobody should expect a diet label alone to add years.

SupplementsThe supplement angle: Vitamin B12

Support a habit, do not replace one

Fully vegan diets contain no reliable natural source of vitamin B12, so health authorities generally advise a supplement or fortified foods. Anyone making the switch should talk with a clinician about B12 and other nutrients worth monitoring.

Supplements can support good habits. They do not replace sleep, movement, nutrition, or medical care. Talk with your healthcare provider before starting anything new.
