The claimWhat Judi actually said
Dench said this at 88, sitting for an episode of Portrait Artist of the Year, while continuing to act with age-related macular degeneration. She added that people should think of themselves as about 56. In the same remarks she volunteered that she does not make a point of keeping fit and is very bad at it.

- Alimujiang A, JAMA Network Open, 2019, US adults over 50 with the lowest life purpose scores had higher all-cause mortality over a median 5.7 years.
- Cohen R, Psychosomatic Medicine, 2016, meta-analysis of prospective studies linked higher purpose in life to lower all-cause mortality and fewer cardiovascular events.
- Hill PL, Psychological Science, 2014, purpose in life predicted lower mortality across adulthood in a 14-year follow-up.
- Boyle PA, Archives of General Psychiatry, 2010, greater purpose in life was associated with reduced risk of incident Alzheimer's disease and mild cognitive impairment.
Why it mattersWhy this matters for longevity
Purpose and engagement are among the few aging factors that stay available to people whose physical options have narrowed.
Her sight loss shows adaptation, learning lines by repetition with friends, rather than withdrawal, which is the behavior the cohort data tracks.
The evidenceWhat the science says
In a study of US adults over 50, those scoring lowest on life purpose had substantially higher all-cause mortality. A meta-analysis of prospective studies found higher purpose associated with lower mortality and fewer cardiovascular events, and a separate cohort found greater purpose associated with lower risk of Alzheimer's disease and mild cognitive impairment.
All of it is observational, and reverse causation is a genuine concern: people who are already well enough stay active and purposeful. No trial has tested whether deliberately building purpose extends life. And the evidence does not support her aside about fitness, since regular physical activity has stronger support than almost anything else discussed here.
TakeawayThe honest takeaway
The practical lesson
Keep something in the diary that needs you, and adapt the method rather than dropping the activity when a capability changes.

SupplementsThe supplement angle: Lutein and zeaxanthin
Support a habit, do not replace one
In age-related macular degeneration, specific antioxidant and mineral formulations have been studied for slowing progression in certain stages of the disease. This is an eye-specific question for an ophthalmologist and has nothing to do with purpose or longevity.
Supplements can support good habits. They do not replace sleep, movement, nutrition, or medical care. Talk with your healthcare provider before starting anything new.
