The claimWhat Jay actually said
In December 2024, on Bill Maher's Club Random podcast, Leno said he gets about four hours of sleep a night. He then told PEOPLE in January 2025 that he has always been that way, that he does not drink coffee, and joked that he would be more tired if he had a real job.

Why it mattersWhy this matters for longevity
Feeling fine after short sleep is not a reliable sign that the body is getting what it needs, because people adapt to how tired they feel.
Sleep needs change with age, and short sleep in later life is tied to cardiometabolic and cognitive risks.
The evidenceWhat the science says
A 2010 meta-analysis of prospective studies found that people who habitually slept less than about 7 hours had a modestly higher risk of death than those sleeping 7 to 8 hours. A 2017 meta-analysis also tied short sleep to diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease and obesity.
These are observational studies, so they show a link, not proof that short sleep causes harm, and illness can shorten sleep too. Genetic natural short sleepers do exist, but they are rare, and one person's experience cannot show that four hours is enough for anyone else.
TakeawayThe honest takeaway
The practical lesson
Most adults should aim for seven or more hours a night instead of treating a celebrity's four hours as a target.

SupplementsThe supplement angle: Melatonin
Support a habit, do not replace one
Melatonin can shift the timing of sleep for some people, but it does not replace lost sleep. Ask a clinician before using it regularly.
Supplements can support good habits. They do not replace sleep, movement, nutrition, or medical care. Talk with your healthcare provider before starting anything new.
